Strengthening Your Family Through Holiday Traditions

Did you ever wonder why traditions are so important? If you take a minute and think back on your most cherished family memories, many if not all of them will be based on family traditions. Researchers tell us that traditions are important in building strong family relationships between generations. Traditions teach children things that are important to their families. They give children a sense of continuity and routine that they can depend on year after year. Children will remember the special experiences of family traditions more than they will remember toys or gifts.

Each holiday through the year provides a perfect time to continue a family tradition or begin a new one. One of my most cherished memories was traveling to Ephraim, Utah every year on Christmas Eve. There I had adopted Danish grandparents whom I loved dearly. As I walked into Aunt LaRue’s house, I was greeted by a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with a roaring fire in the fireplace. After hugs and kisses, we would all sit down to a meal of Danish dumpling soup followed by homemade ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate sauce. Then just before bed, with the help of Aunt LaRue, I would write my letter to Santa and leave him a glass of milk and a cookie. Although Aunt LaRue and Uncle Vertis have been gone for years, their memory still burns brightly in my heart.

So keep those traditions going, even if it takes a little more effort or time. If the traditions of your childhood don’t fit your current family situation, think of new traditions to start. Then continue those traditions as your family grows. It’s never too late to start a family tradition. I promise that if you do, you’ll be making family memories and family cohesiveness that will last a lifetime.

I learn best from others so please reply and post your most memorable family tradition. I know there are a lot of great ideas out there.
