The Benefits of Being a Fit Couple

Health and fitness are important to feeling strong and confident and will help you accomplish what you need to on a daily basis. Make fitness part of your everyday routine, for you, your spouse and future children. Set goals and make a plan to become fit and vibrant together!

Here are some great reasons to become a fit couple:

Fitness Makes You Happier. Exercise releases endorphins (chemicals in the brain) that make you feel more relaxed, less anxious and happier. It also makes you more toned and feel more confident about yourself.

Fitness Combats Chronic Disease.   Studies have proven that exercise decreases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and many forms of cancer. Improved fitness is also associated with less illness, fewer visits to the doctor and a higher quality of life.

Fitness Controls Weight. You won’t lose a lot of weight by starting an exercise regimen, but exercise has been proven to help maintain weight. The National Weight Control Registry was developed to identify characteristics of people who have lost significant amounts of weight and kept it off for long periods of time. It tracks over 10,000 people who have succeeded in long-term weight loss. One of the key behaviors to control their weight was being physically active (exercise for about 1 hour per day) and monitoring their weight regularly.

Fitness Can Strengthen Your Marriage. Fitness is important in a marriage because it makes you feel more attractive, self-confident and can provide more energy for intimacy with your spouse. Physical activity can enhance arousal for women and decrease the potential for erectile dysfunction in men as they get older.

Fitness Improves Your Energy Level. People who are fit have improved endurance to get through the day, both physically and mentally. There is no need for artificial stimulants and caffeine kicks to keep you going.

Fitness Improves Sleep.   People sleep significantly better and feel more alert in the day when they get regular exercise. A study from the journal of Mental Health and Physical Activity which included more than 2600 men and women shows the importance of exercise in relation to many health factors, including sleep. People who were physically active and fit had significantly fewer problems with falling asleep at night and less sleepiness during the day.

Fitness Is Fun! You can work out at home, at the gym, alone or with your spouse or a friend, indoor, outdoor, in a class or going on a bike ride or hike. The ways to be fit and active is endless! You should challenge yourself but also find what makes you feel good and happy. Your goals and routine may change and mixing up your routine (rather than just running every day) will decrease your chance of overuse injury and fight boredom. Get others involved with physical activity. Sign up for a run or event and cross the finish line!
